Specs at a Glance

The Atlas, which debuted in 2018, is the first three-row midsize SUV offered by Volkswagen. The Atlas has been a hit to date with its spacious interior and comfortable ride quality, making it a leader in its class. In 2021, the Atlas has some updates to its appearance, including a restyled front end and some updates to the taillight design. The cabin has more interior upgrades this year as well. There are multiple trim levels available in the Atlas, ranging from the base S to the top Premium R-Line.

Performance differs for the Volkswagen Atlas depending on whether you get the S or the Premium R-Line. Powering the S is a turbo four-cylinder engine. The base engine has a top power output of 235 HP, and it is paired with front-wheel drive on the base trim level. If you get the Premium R-Line with all-wheel drive, you will get the same standard engine. If you choose the front-wheel drive version of the Premium R-Line, the base engine is replaced by a V6 with an increased power output to 276 HP. The V6 engine also gives the Atlas a maximum tow rating of 5,000 pounds.

A sporty yet stylish appearance is a hallmark of the S and the Premium R-Line. The S trim has LED headlights to give its front end better visibility and a more dramatic appearance. The Atlas S also has standard 18-inch alloy wheels. A power liftgate is added to the Premium R-Line. It also has larger 21-inch wheels and chrome accents. The Premium R-Line also has a standard panoramic sunroof. This trim level gains adaptive headlights that move in the direction you are driving, which is especially helpful when cornering.

At the base level, the S trim of the Atlas is well-equipped with features and amenities. The Atlas has a 6.5-inch touchscreen display. It also has standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You'll get a six-speaker sound system and a WiFi hotspot included, and the S provides access to Volkswagen's app-based services. Standard safety technology includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward collision mitigation. Remote engine start and a household-style power outlet are added to the Premium R-Line. Additional technology upgrades for this trim include a digital instrument panel and more safety aids. Navigation is standard, and the trim adds a heated steering wheel for comfort. Captain's chairs and leather seats are also included.
