Specs at a Glance

Volkswagen fans shopping for a sedan have two flagship offerings to choose from: the compact Jetta and the midsize Passat. Here's how the 2018 models of these Volkswagen best-sellers compare with one another.

With the smaller Jetta, you have a choice of three turbocharged four-cylinder engines: a 150-horsepower version paired with either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, a larger 170-hp version, and the top-of-the-line 2.0-liter model that provides 210 horses.

The Passat offers either a 174-hp turbo-four that's all new for 2018 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission or a V6 that provides 280 horses and the sporty handling of a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The 2018 Jetta and Passat share a similar appearance although the latter is the larger of the two. Both cars are distinguished by their clean, modern design and outstanding cargo space: 15.7 cubic feet in the Jetta and 15.9 cubic feet in the Passat. Each features supportive, comfortable seats along with seating for up to five, although the spacious rear seat in the Passat makes it the better choice for those who frequently transport several adults or tall teens. Both vehicles are lauded for their intuitive European-inspired design.

The base model of the 2018 Jetta and Passat are equipped with a five-inch touchscreen infotainment system with both USB and Bluetooth connectivity; the Passat has two extra audio speakers for a total of six. You can upgrade either the Jetta or Passat with a sunroof, push-button start, keyless entry, a larger touchscreen, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, a Fender premium audio system, two-zone automatic climate control, navigation, and a climate-controlled glove box. The Passat can also be upgraded with remote start, an additional stereo upgrade option, and an additional USB port.

Both vehicles have a rearview camera in all models, and the Passat also features a standard Intelligent Crash Response System, which takes safety steps to protect the vehicle's occupants after airbags deploy. Available active driver assistance features for the Jetta include blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning with automatic braking, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control. The Passat is available with those features plus parking assist.
