The Volkswagen Tiguan has long been a favorite among drivers, and now there’s even more to celebrate. Recently, the Tiguan earned a 5-star safety crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the highest possible rating. Along with its sturdy construction, the Tiguan offers an extensive range of safety features designed to protect occupants in the event of a collision, complemented by advanced driver-assistance technologies.

Safety Technology in the Volkswagen Tiguan

The VW Tiguan comes with a comprehensive set of modern safety technologies aimed at preventing accidents and minimizing injuries during a crash. For the 2025 model year, the Tiguan adds new airbags, including knee airbags for the driver, a center airbag for the front row, and rear-row airbags. Side curtain airbags provide additional protection, bringing the total to 10 newly designed airbags to safeguard passengers during rollovers or collisions.

This year, every Tiguan model also includes an expanded set of advanced safety aids. Starting with the base trim, all models feature VW’s IQ.DRIVE system, which provides semi-automated driving assistance, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and monitoring for pedestrians and cyclists. Blind spot monitoring helps detect vehicles in adjacent lanes, while the rear traffic alert system improves safety when backing up. Adaptive cruise control maintains a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead, and lane-change assist reduces the risk of merging into an occupied lane. Emergency assist can alert first responders if you are in a crash and cannot call for help. Additional standard systems include exit warning, which alerts you to approaching vehicles or objects as you open your door, and parking distance control.

In addition to these standard features, select trims offer extra safety enhancements. The top trim includes a surround-view camera and an automated parking system for easier maneuvering in tight spaces. Some trims also feature a head-up display and adaptive headlights for enhanced exterior visibility.
