Passat fans, rejoice! The popular midsize sedan is upping the ante for the forthcoming model year, adding a new performance-tuned GT model to its lineup. The new model will be based on the Passat GT concept shown at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, showcasing similar athletic design cues and performance upgrades among other sporty features.

The new Passat GT will bear some resemblance to the Golf GTI, sharing the same aggressive front fascia, black honeycomb grille and red accent lines. It’s also likely to debut with LED headlights, smoked taillights, black mirror caps, black window surrounds, a black roof, a black decklid spoiler, a sports muffler and GT-exclusive alloy wheels with red calipers, all of which will further distinguish it from the rest of the lineup.

Under the hood, the Passat GT will likely pack the automaker’s 3.6-liter VR6 powerplant, which puts out 280 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in other examples. Paired to a dual-clutch, six-speed automatic transmission, drivers can also switch to manual mode via steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. Other modifications, such as a performance-tuned suspension, will give the sedan a sportier driving feel to match its new digs.

The 2018 Passat GT is currently set to launch early next year, although the details are still in the works. Stay tuned to our blog for the latest Volkswagen news!
